Drinking on a Budget -- Discount Liquors and Wines
By Mark Etinger
Times are tough these days, but giving up on booze would only make them tougher, don't you think? Let's take a look at some discount liquors and wines to help you enjoy some sauce without breaking the bank:
Liqueur
A lot of people think of liqueurs as rich, chocolatey drinks, but they are actually available in a variety of flavors, including fruity options like banana and strawberry. There is one common denominator, however -- liqueur is super-affordable!
Shop online at a discount liquor store, and you'll be amazed at the selection of liqueur for under $10. If you're looking for kosher liquor, though, be careful -- white and milk chocolate liqueurs count as dairy products.
Wine
It's easy to spend a lot of money on wine, but it's just as easy to order bottles for as little as $2. Baron Herzog wine, for example, offers a variety of affordable bottles, including white zinfandel, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, chenin blanc, and sauvignon blanc -- all for under $10!
If you're shopping for kosher wines, be sure to pay attention to whether you are ordering mevushal or non-mevushal bottles. Although both types can be delicious, only mevushal wines will remain kosher no matter who serves them.
Whiskey
You might think that all whiskey is expensive, but if you do your homework online, you'll find some affordable discount liquors for sale. American whiskey in particular is often as affordable as $6 -- for the best bargains, look for Jim Beam, Old Crow, and Wild Turkey whiskeys.
If your tastes are a little more discerning, you probably want to shop for single malt scotch whiskey -- top-of-the-line whiskey produced in a single Scottish distillery. Single malt scotch is more expensive than American whiskey, but you can find bottles online for as little as $25 -- definitely a bargain, since the best single malt scotch tends to go for $700 or more.
Gin
Gin is easily available for $10 or less by brands like Gordon's, Beefeater, and Bombay Sapphire -- the latter is actually produced by Bacardi, a leading manufacturer of affordable rum. Because of its neutral flavor, gin is likely to be a crowd pleaser.
In fact, the liquor is essential for the classic martini, which involves a combination of gin and vermouth. It's also a key ingredient in a Tom Collins, along with sugar, lemon juice, and carbonated water. Both of these drinks date back to the mid 19th century.
Rum
Speaking of Bacardi -- if you're looking for affordable rum, this Bermuda-based label is a name to remember. Even Hemingway enjoyed the brand, as the author always ordered his daiquiris with a Bacardi White Label base.
Choose Bacardi Light or Gold for a classic taste, or enjoy a variety of delicious flavors, including Big Apple, Coconut, Grand Melon, Razz, Limon, and Torched Cherry. If you shop online, you can order all of these for as little as $5.
Whether you're looking for premium kosher liquor or affordable kosher wines , LiquorsGalore.com provides the selection and quality to fit your needs.
