Totally agree Scott ... and note too that it changes with the times ... actually reflects society's values at a given period  ... usually that of the statusquo ... but could start out as fringe group such as Christianity ... very revolutionary for its time and maybe now outlived its usefullness as new forms evolve ...

Yes, a lot of things that were allowed or even promoted in early Christianity (and other religions) back in the day have either fallen out of favor or are expressly prohibited and discouraged by modern culture.  And what is even more interesting is that most modern churches have adapted to that change to continue to attract followers.  The only ones that continue to practice the old ways are often persecuted by the government today.

But if you break down all religions to its basic message, and subtract all the history, and rhetoric, and culture, and individuals, interestingly, you almost always get the same message.
