Battle of the Islands!

A little friendly competition to see who can vote their flag to the top!

A New Way to Vote!

Now you can vote for your favorite flag simply visiting CaribbeanChoice while logged in or by posting in the forum!

  • Step 1:  Register to Vote
To have your votes count for the flag you chose, you must register to vote!  Visit this page and select which flag you want to vote for!

  • Step 2: Post in the Forum or Visit Specially Marked Pages
Every time you post in the forum, 10 votes are automatically credited towards the flag you chose in the Battle of the Islands.  You must be logged in for the votes to count.

This new way to vote will help reduce the load on the web server (the reason why you sometimes could not reach the website) and also reward those who participate on CaribbeanChoice.

More ways to vote will be posted here soon!

Traditional Way: Voting in the Poll

Due to the web server being overloaded by people voting too fast or too many people voting at the same time, we are either going to have to remove this method of voting all together or institute flood control, which will stop people from voting if there is a risk of the server being overloaded.

In order to make these changes, there will be times during the month were you will be unable to vote using the poll method (i.e. by using the "Cast My Vote" button above).  Also, if the server gets overloaded, the poll method of voting will be turned off.

It's recommended that you post in the forum and take advantage of other ways to vote in the battle.

Current Stats

To see the current statistic presented in an easier to read format, visit the main Battle of the Islands page.

Let the Battle Begin!

and Good Luck!

Wow, I've voted over 400 times this month already, and that is just by me posting in the forum!  Those 10 votes per post add up fast!

If you haven't already registered what flag you wish to vote for, I would suggest doing so now.  That way every post you make earns votes for the flag of your choice.   It adds up quicker than you think!

I just saw a service unavailable message and its apparent that people are voting too fast and its overloading the server.  I am temporarily disabing the battle poll so the server remains available to visitors.

Youc an still earn votes for your country by posting in the forum using the instructions posted above.

Okay, I've turned it back on for a bit.  Hopefully I won't have to turn it off again due to the server getting overloaded.

To prevent the server from getting overloaded, please limit yourself to
1 vote per second.

Thank you.

The server is overloaded again.  I have to shut off the poll above.  Please vote by posting in the forum, where you earn 10 votes per post.  Thank you.

Battle of the Islands II

Starting in June 2006, we will be retiring the current battle and starting Battle of the Islands II with new stricter rules on voting.  This also means that all the world records for Battle of the Islands II will start at zero (0)!

To prevent the server from being overloaded, please only vote ONCE PER SECOND using the poll above, or earn 10 votes per post you make.

If you are trying to beat a world record, please try to do so June 2006 in the Battle of the Islands II where it will be easier for you to do so.  Please do not crash our server trying to beat the Battle of the Islands I records.

Anyone who continues to vote so quickly that it overloads our server will be banned from voting the rest of the month!

I have made changes to the poll so that it now tracks how fast you are voting and flags your account, so I know who is doing it.

Thanks for your understanding.

I've removed the restriction to voting 1 vote per second.  You can go ahead and vote quickly but please DO NOT CRASH MY SERVER.

If you cause the server to be unavailable or to react slowly, I will shut off the poll JUST LIKE I DID IN 2004 WITH GUYANA in the month they received almost 3 million votes.

There will be a new "Battle of the Islands II" that has different rules where you cannot vote that fast.  This is the last month of unlimited voting.  Under the new rules, it will be impossible to get that many votes in a month.

The new Battle of the Islands II will have new ways to vote and will be more of a game where you have to participate in and contribute to the website.  There will be a cap on the number of votes you can get by voting in the poll, so users will have to invite more people and get them to vote.  It will no longer be possible for one or two people to win it by themselves (unless no one else is playing).  They will be able to earn votes for their flag by submitting recipes & links, purchasing travel & advertising, visiting a sponsor's webpage, posting on the forum or doing other things on the website.

Since the total number of possible votes will vary from month to month, there will probably be no world records under the Battle of the Islands II except for the number on months won.

The new Battle will be more dynamic and will better reflect how many people of a particular country are participating on the website, rather than who is willing to vote the longest.

The battle is fun, the problem right now is that some people don't like the fact that I have to change the rules to prevent the server from crashing, and the fact that not everyone knows the technique for voting very fast.

Some people who know how to vote fast think its unfair I am removing their ability to vote fast.  Some people who do not know how to vote fast are complaining that there are people who can vote 100 times faster than them, and think that is unfair.

Once the Battle of the Islands II is setup and people get used to it, I think everything will be fine and will be fun for everyone again.

I don't think it is possible for Aruba to increase their precentage much unless other people stop voting.  The problem is that people voting against Aruba would lower Aruba's percentage more than Aruba would be able to gain in percentage.

Sounds weird, but lets do some math and see the results.

Lets start will smaller numbers to make it simple.

Aruba has 96 votes (96%).
Everyone else has 4 votes (4%).
Total: 100 votes (100%).

Aruba adds 2 votes and the results would be:

Aruba has 98 votes (96.08%).
Everyone else has 4 votes (3.92%).
Total 102 votes (100%).

Or everyone else adds 2 votes:

Aruba has 96 votes (94.12%).
Everyone else has 6 votes (5.88%).
Total 102 votes (100%)

If they both add 2 votes:

Aruba has 98 votes (94.23%).
Everyone else has 6 votes (5.77%).
Total 104 votes (100%).

As you can see by the math, 2 votes barely increase Aruba's percentage because they already have most of the votes, however, 2 votes against Aruba would significantly reduce Aruba's percentage of votes.

As shown in the below example, Aruba would need to vote 22 times as fast as everyone else just to stay at 96%.

Aruba has 144 votes (96%).
Everyone else has 6 votes (4%).
Total 150 votes (100%).

In other words, for every 2 votes someone else casts, they would need 44 votes to counter just to stay in the same spot percentage-wise.
