Gifts have never been something that I personally need, although I do appreciate them when I do get them.  I prefer to get someone something they want or lik, rather than some token gift that will just collect dust.  So I usually give less gifts, but the gifts I do give are usually valued more.

About re-gifting, I have to admit that I have been guilty of it.  But I usually keep all the gifts I get.  I can be a bit of a pack rat sometimes.

I do not see gifting as falling into the need column ... its a gesture of appreciation or to lift one's spirit or just for fun or kind consideration ... I love to see the surprise and unexpected look in the recipient's face ... it must be meaningful and does not have to be something material ... could be one's time or bringing to one's attention an opportunity he or she would not have been aware of and could benefit them ...  even friendship or a mentor ...
I have a hard time parting with gifts I've received even if I do not have use for it or its something I do not care for ... I feel guilty ... aware that thought and time and money went into the act ... call me old fashion here ... Big%20smile

Here in Holland...when you give   gifts to someone...   The person stays there with you  till you open the  gift...that means...*wrapping out  with a smile ..  my dear !!!
Like it  or  not......they want  to see  the expression on your face....Big%20smile

I do not insist on opening in my presence but it is kinda fun and pleasing to see their face light up!

Here people usually open gives right away in the person's presence, with the exception of certain occasions like Christmas, Birthdays, Valentines Day, etc. where they usually wait to open the gifts that day.

Personally, I would be disappointed if they do not open the gift in front of me.  I want to see their face light up.
