Found this site yesterday while looking for arepa recipes....was also looking for paymie, you know, kind of a sweet arepa...

My mother used to make this in Trinidad and I would love to be able to serve it up for Christmas.

A Float recipe would also be nice, to go with the accra?

paimie

2 cup grated coconut

1lbcornmeal

1tsp.blackpepper

1tspsalt

3/4cup raisins

1lbpumpkin,grated

1oz. or 2tsp.shortening,softened

10z.or2tsp.margarine.softened

1/2cup sugar

1cup water(approx.)

banana leaves

string

Combine coconut, cornmeal, black pepper, salt, raisins, pumpkin, shortening, margarine and sugar.stir in enough water to make firm dough.wipe banana leaves, cut in four inch squares and steam or dip in boiling water to make them pliable.Drain well.Place about 2tsp mixture on a piece of leaf in an oblong shape.Fold leaf over,like an envelope and tie.Cook in boiling water for about 20-30 minutes untill set, enjoy .

floats(fry bake)

4cups flour

1 1/2tspsalt

4tspbaking powder

1 1/2 cupwater(approx.)

icu of oil for frying

sift flour,salt and baking powder.add enough water to make a soft dough.knead for about ten minutes leave to rest for 1/2 hourmore.cut in pieces and roll each piece to 5-6 inches in diameter and 1/4 inch thick.Fry in hot oil, turn once  and fry untill brown. drain on paper towel or tissue, enjoy.

Thanks for the recipes...got a but caught up with Christmas preparations and so I don't have all the ingredients for the paimie recipe...will try it for New Years supper..

Hi raraavis,i spend the day at  my sister's   house yesterday   and  they were singing  the exact song that  your father use to sing, we had a few cd's from trinidad and 3-5 of my family members also went over to the  neighbor's house with their spoon and bottle to play parang music, and yes,  we also had punch-a creme,eggnog, blackcake ,sorrel   and  ginger beer.Hope your  chrismas was good , and have a happy and prosperous newyear.

When I started collecting the ingredientes to try this recipe it came across to me like something very new...But once we got to the 'banana&strings' part I realized that it was nothing more than a version of the spanish caribbean pasteles recipe; they use grated plantain, wild yam(dasheen), malanga, pumpkin etc...

 Your recipe introduced me to a different flavor in pastelles and I noticed the 'no filling' made it even faster to make. Caribbean kitchen is very much alike from Island to Island; but everyone seems to think that they have some little 'hidden spice' that makes their dish Unique...It might well be so! 

 Thanks for posting the recipe...I'm planning to go shock my Trini friends with this one.
