The Guyana government has declared Thursday a day of national mourning for the victims of last weekend's massacre in the east coast village of Lusignan.

Heavily armed gunmen stormed the village on Saturday and killed six adults and five children, apparently at random.

Since then, villagers have held demonstrations over police failure to prevent violence.

On Wednesday police again used tear gas and arrested at least three of the estimated

100 people who were refused permission to march to the capital Georgetown.
