Mom in Spain happy that her 10-year-old gave birth
By ALAN CLENDENNING , 11.03.10, 12:59 PM EDT

MADRID -- A Romanian Gypsy woman whose 10-year-old daughter just gave birth in Spain says she's delighted to have a new granddaughter and doesn't understand why the birth has shocked anyone - let alone become an international sensation.

Spanish authorities have released few details about the case to protect the girl's privacy.

Yahoo! BuzzBut in comments published Wednesday, her mother told reporters the baby's father is a 13-year-old boy who is still in Romania and is no longer going out with her daughter.

The 10-year-old girl and her baby daughter plan to stay in Spain because the young couple separated, said the girl's mother. She identified herself only as Olimpia and appeared to be in her 30s but did not give her age.

She also said she didn't understand the attention the case was generating because she and her daughter are Romanian Gypsies, or Roma, and their custom is to allow girls to marry young even though that's against the law in Romania.

"That's the way we get married," the girl's mother told reporters Tuesday outside the modest apartment building in the southern town of Lebrija where the family lives.

"Mother at 10 years old" blared a headline in Barcelona's La Vanguardia newspaper, which dedicated two pages to the story.

In contrast, news about the 10-year-old mother barely registered in Romania, with stories buried inside newspapers focusing on the controversy the birth had caused among Spaniards.

The girl moved to Spain about three weeks ago, her mother said, and her baby was born in a public hospital last week in the nearby city of Jerez de la Frontera. There were no complications during the birth, and the 10-year-old and her baby are doing fine, her mother said.

"She's doing well and is very happy with her daughter," the woman said.

The 10-year-old and her baby are living with the new grandmother while Spanish social welfare authorities determine whether the family will be able to provide for the baby.

Under Spanish law, having consensual sex with someone under age 13 is classified as child abuse. But a Justice Ministry official said this particular case is complicated, because the alleged father is not in Spain and is also a minor. It is not clear whether he could be charged, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of ministry policy.

Romanian law allows girls to get married at age 16 with parental consent, or at 18 without it.

But arranged "marriages" between teenagers are relatively common among Roma, who make up about 1.5 million of Romania's 22 million people. Families "marry off" daughters when they reach puberty, with the "husband" usually being a couple of years older. The marriages are not recognized by the state.

Roma girls are often not encouraged to pursue a full education, and Romanian authorities do not widely enforce education laws that require children to attend school until age 16.

In 2003, there was an international outcry after the European Union envoy to Romania, Baroness Emma Nicholson, demanded that a 12-year-old Roma girl and her 15-year-old common-law husband separate and cease all intimate relations until they were legally able to be married. The couple did separate for an unknown amount of time.

I remember a calypso about that, vutje. Ten years!! In my time I didn't even know where my private parts were on my body. Cripes!!!!!! The young girls of today are over-developed due to the growth chemicals they put in the edible animals and poultry. They have watermelon breasts at age seven and eight and are mistaken for older women in their 20s and 30s.   They're precocious, most of them.

Well 300 years ago, people only lived to about 34 years old, and married very young (typically right after puberty or early teens).  It made sense back then when life expectancy was so short that if you didn't have kids when you were young, you would probably die while they were still an infant.

Fast forward to today, and we now live to 45 to 80 (average life expectancy) depending on the country you live in, and having kids young does not make as much sense, especially economically.  It is better economically to wait until you are older and more educated before starting to have kids.  This is why most states enforce this so rigorously.  People having kids young causes welfare cases, where people waiting until they are 30 to have kids means they pay taxes and are a productive part of society.

From what I have read about the Roma people, they still practice what they practiced 200 to 300 years ago, which is get married young, the women has children and tends the house, and the man works.  Very contrary to modern western norms, which is why everyone is freaking out.

If you were born 150 to 300 years ago, you would consider someone marrying just after puberty normal in most cultures.

What is interesting is that even 100 to 150 years ago most cultures had a "coming of age ceremony" somewhere between the ages of 13 and 16, and originally this indicated that the girl was available for marriage.

Yes, but this is not the dark ages, and even following your argument, 10 is a bit young.

Plus, having babies that young increases the risk of birth defects. Not to mention, a 10 year old is not going to be prepared to raise her own child without help.  The best ages for a woman to have babies is in their 20's and 30's, actually.

What are the grandparents for, Scott? They're there to help. But seriously. A child ten years old is still a baby. I screamed murder giving birth to my son and I was much older than 10. The pain!!   No. His head wasn't big at all.

Actually, physiologically, the best time to have a child is 15 years old. Obviously what's physiologically right is not necessarily culturally or societally right. But between 15 and 17 a woman's body is primed. All her vital organs are in a very healthy state and can take on the extra workload of a baby with great ease.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's an 8 year old the next time. Then next it will be a baby giving birth to a baby.

Parents are very open with their children. They talk about sex, about ... size and all sorts of sexual topics. Some even allow their daughter's boyfriend to spend the night in the daughter's room. In some cases, the children are controlling the parents.

Morals and values gone out the door. If parents can be talking about the size with their girl children, telling them what size they like, then what do you expect. Cripes!!!
