Mexico Hotels: Bursting With Culture
By Jennifer Smith
Whilst Mexico is a wonderful location for sunbathing and relaxing in, it is also a country filled with history, culture and a spirit you'll not find anywhere else on earth. Using one of the many Mexico hotels on offer as your starting point, be sure to take a day or two to enjoy these sights and acitivites:
AZTEC RUINS Mexico is full of amazing and awe-inspiring Aztec ruins. Most Mexico hotels will point you in the right direction or you can be booked onto one of the many tours available. To see the Aztec ruins is to understand Mexico's roots. Mexico City has been a large centre of civilization for hundreds of years, starting with the Aztec empire of Tenochtitlan. Among the hustle and bustle of a thriving metropolis, you'll discover these amazing signs of ancient civilisation. With its discovery in 1978, Templo Mayor is unique Aztec ruins located in the heart of the city, or visit the Aztec city of Teotihuacan, which shows the power once held in this Aztec centre.
MAYAN RUINS Voted one of the seven new wonders of the world, the ruins of Chichen Itza lie between Cancun and Merida, so Mexico hotels in this area are a great base. It is believed that the Mayan community thrived here between 700AD and 900AD; the most imposing site is the Pyramid of Kukulkan, which towers above the other buildings. Be warned, this is a very popular tourist site so try to visit in the morning to avoid the crowds.
MEXICO CITY Spend some time strolling around Mexico City itself. A hybrid of ancient history and modernity, this bustling city combines important archaeological sites with theme parks, floating gardens and football! This is a great place to really soak up the Mexican atmosphere; stop off for a taste of real Mexico food, rich and spicy or perhaps a cerveza to enjoy whilst watching the world go by. Whilst here, take a ride on a Gondola - brightly painted trajineras to cruise the beautiful, tree-lined canals and Aztec-engineered floating gardens of Xochimilco.
MEXICAN SPIRIT It's not all work and no play in Mexico. Mexico is an island filled with beautiful beaches so you'll be spoilt for choice; or take in the country's rich sea life with a spot of diving. The reefs of Los Manchones, Cuevones, Chital or La Bandera are all prized diving spots worth a closer look, known for their extraordinary marine life and unusual cave structures.
