Saint LuciaImmerse Yourself in Nature on the Island of St Lucia.

By Daniel Collins

 Travel Guide

The sublime natural beauty of St Lucia attracts travellers looking to unwind in the sunshine. With a spectacular landscape encompassing enchanting rainforests, mighty volcanic peaks and striking black and white sand beaches it can be all too easy to simply lounge in the sun whilst failing to notice the bountiful natural delights on the island awaiting exploration.

Although the island is just 27 miles long and 14 miles wide, there are 19,000 acres of emerald rainforest and 98 miles of stunning coastline to discover there. As such, the island is a hiker's paradise and boasts a number of beautiful trails which cater for all levels of fitness. Easy walks include the Garden Trail (ten minutes from Castries) which follows a leisurely loop through a medicinal garden to the Mini-Zoo where you can see native wildlife including iguanas, the St. Lucian parrot and boa constrictors. Nature lovers will also find it hard to resist the Millet Bird Sanctuary Trail (35 minutes from Marigot Bay) which takes hikers along a moderate trail through lush flora and fauna which is a haven for over 30 species of bird (including five endemic species such as the Saint Lucia Black Finch). The challenging Enbas Saut Waterfalls Trail is set at the foot of Mount Gimie (30 minutes from Soufriere) where you can enjoy a refreshing dip in pure rainforest water after a strenuous hike through forest and woodland to the two beautiful waterfalls that cascade into Troumassee River.

The iconic peaks of the Piton Mountains are cloaked in lush vegetation and soar 2,000 feet into the endless blue skies. They can be navigated by adventurous climbers who are rewarded with magical views from the top. However, if climbing isn't your cup of tea then why not ride on horseback through the pretty fishing village of Gros Islet right down to the sandy beach? Similarly, you can mountain bike through the forest for an exhilarating experience or enjoy an open-back jeep safari and explore tropical forests, picturesque villages and banana plantations. For those in search of relaxation the therapeutic steaming mud baths are a truly special experience. The sheltered Caribbean coast is ideal for snorkelling and diving near beautiful coral reefs whilst the rugged Atlantic coast offers wild waves for experienced surfers.

A wonderful way to interact with nature is to zip wire through the rainforest canopy. Mini zip lines are even available for kids so the whole family can enjoy this breathtaking experience. You can also learn about the indigenous vegetation from an expert guide aboard the rainforest aerial tram.

Kids will delight in discovering the island's incredible diversity of wildlife from parrots, iguanas, snakes and bats to fantastic experiences such as whale-watching. They can even stay up late as a special treat to watch leatherback turtles by moonlight.

St Lucia holidays offer a slice of the Caribbean and a veritable treasure trove of natural delights and activities for the whole family.
